Module One consists of 10 core lessons that are best offered as a series. They are designed to prepare new mothers and/or fathers for their own future and their families= future. Lesson One begins with an opportunity for looking back before looking forward and starting their memory books. Additional lessons lay the ground work for building a strong family, involving fathers, contemplating marriage, making healthy choices, and preparing to implement those choices. Participants assess the options available to them, weighing the pros and cons of each choice:

  • Marry the father or delay marriage but stay romantically involved, OR
  • Not marry the father but establish a healthy co-parenting relationship, OR
  • Not marry and not involve the father due to various risk factors (e.g., illegal activities, drug abuse, domestic violence); and find ways to involve a male role model or father figure in the child's life.
The module concludes with lessons on how to carry out their choice and plan for parenting their children in the future. Participants prepare a parenting agreement that specifies the choice the mother has made, how decisions regarding the child will be made, how to solve problems when disagreements occur, and how the expenses of raising the child will be shared.
